ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN GORDON...

Gordon has several economic development units that work together along several fronts:

Workforce Development:  Developing our best resource "our people" is critical to our overall planning.  Not only the enhancement of leader skills training, but a consciousness of our social order system needs are important to us.  The crime rate in our area is low and we have several programs that address many other needs as well.  High school graduation rates and other subject areas are within our focus.

Working with the appropriate partners, The Downtown Development Authority is concentrating on this project.

Downtown Business Development:  The Better Hometown/Mainstreet and Downtown Development groups are spear heading the development of strategies to:

>> Develop Business Retention Strategies
>> Inventory of business and assessment of public retail needs
>> Program to purchase and rent/lease floor space as needed

Recruitment/Business/Industry:  Based on recent assessments of need, the Gordon Development Authority and Better Hometown/Mainstreet groups have active plans for recruitment of businesses.  The plans include incentives plans tailored to meet the needs of prospects.

Infrastructure Expansion:  The city is increasing its potable water capacity from 400,000 GPD to 1,200,00 GPD.  2000 was the year of installation of a state-of-the-art wetlands construction sewage treatment system.

Plans are underway to expand the water/sewer system to include the 2006-2008 Fall Line Freeway Northern By-pass highway area.

Working with the Development Authority, the City of Gordon and Ivey have plans to develop a 200 acre industrial development tract by the year 2005.
